Train Rules in Japan
Japan has numerous rules, and adhering to them is part of the national character. This time, let’s introduce the rules for riding trains. There are not only rules written inside the trains but also many unwritten ones. People using trains in Japan should be mindful.
1. Priority for exiting passengers
In Japanese trains, passengers must wait for others to exit completely before boarding. Wait until passengers have fully exited, then board the train. Once aboard, move towards the back of the train to ensure everyone can board comfortably.
2. Queue up while waiting
When waiting for the train, stand in a single or double line. There are markings on the platform indicating where to line up, so stand in those designated spots. When the train arrives, gradually board starting from the front of the line. Those at the front should try to move towards the back of the train.
3. Maintain silence inside the train
Talking loudly or using your phone for calls is prohibited inside the train. Enjoy quiet conversations or listen to music. Set your phone to silent mode and be mindful of notification sounds.
4. No eating or drinking
Eating inside the train is not allowed. Drinking should also be kept to a minimum, and spills should be avoided. It's best to avoid beverages like alcohol or Starbucks drinks that might spill easily. However, on bullet trains or long-distance trains, eating and drinking are permitted.
5. Keep left when walking
When walking through the station, keep to the left. Stations can be very crowded, especially during morning and evening rush hours, so walking on the left side helps avoid collisions and allows for comfortable movement.
6. Beware of Groping and covert photography
Unfortunately, incidents of groping are common on Japanese trains, especially during crowded times. Be particularly vigilant when the train is packed. Also, be cautious of where you place your hands when the train is crowded, as false accusations of groping can occur. Additionally, be mindful of the possibility of covert photography, such as upskirt photography, especially in station areas. If you experience any such incidents, seek help from those around you or raise your voice.
7. Pay Attention to Women-Only Cars
During morning and evening rush hours, there are women-only cars available. Generally, these are indicated on the platform surface, often marked in pink. If you're uncomfortable in crowded spaces or want to avoid the possibility of harassment, consider using these women-only cars. They typically have fewer people and provide a safer environment.
8. Fill Seats Efficiently
Try to occupy seats as efficiently as possible to accommodate as many passengers as you can. Japanese trains are often crowded, so it's essential to ensure that as many people as possible can sit down. Also, be mindful of priority seating areas.
9. Handle Baggage with Care
Large backpacks can inconvenience those around you, so be careful not to bump into others with them. Additionally, avoid leaving baggage on seats when the train is crowded.
10. No Smoking
Smoking is prohibited on trains, platforms, and station premises. Smokers should find designated smoking areas. Note that vaping and e-cigarettes are also prohibited, and offenders may face penalties.
These are some of the things to be aware of when traveling on trains in Japan. While Japan boasts a highly developed train network that allows you to travel across the country easily, it's essential to be mindful of the numerous rules in place. Let's all strive to use trains conveniently and ensure that everyone can travel comfortably by following these rules!
